Citation policy
How to cite an Institute document, how the identifiers work, and what the Institute regards as a misquotation.
§1How to cite
The preferred form is:
Every document page carries this string, filled in, in its margin column. Sub-pages of a multi-part document carry the identifier of the parent document with a part suffix; cite the part you used.
§2Identifiers
Table 1. Identifier prefixes by document type.

| A document that changes type retains the identifier it was issued with, so that citations to it remain resolvable. The identifier is not re-issued. | ||
§3Reproducing a certainty rating
The Institute cannot control reproduction and does not attempt to. Every rating badge carries its definition on hover and in print, and this policy states the request. Beyond that, the secretariat records that a body publishing gradable judgements accepts that they will be misused, and that the alternative of publishing nothing gradable is worse. The full exchange is on the citation policy disposition page.
§4Licence and reuse
Documents are published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence. Attribution is to the Compound Evidence Institute with the document identifier. No restriction on commercial reuse is asserted beyond the terms of the licence.
Figures may be reproduced under the same terms. Figures carrying an illustrative marker must be reproduced with that marker; a reconstructed curve reproduced without it becomes a claim the Institute has not made.
§5Machine-readable access
A summary of the document set for answer engines and research crawlers is published at /llms.txt. Crawler access is set out in /robots.txt. Every document page carries structured data using the medical vocabulary appropriate to its type: MedicalWebPage on assessed documents, Drug on monographs, MedicalTrial on trial abstracts, MedicalStudy on syntheses and DefinedTerm on glossary entries.
